Diet Vitamins, etc

Week 1-2: In your first two weeks, your diet consists entirely of liquids. Ideally, this would be a low carbohydrate, low calorie liquid diet. If you find yourself fatigued, it is fine to occasionally incorporate a diabetic protein drink. (We recommend Diabetic Boost, Diabetic Ensure or Resource). During this initial phase your vitamins should be chewable.

Week 2-4: As you move into your second phase, you'll begin to incorporate soft and then to solid foods. Depending on the patient, this will happen sooner or later. If you are unable to make a quick transition, don't worry, patients transition at different rates. Traditionally, the soft diet begins with scrambled eggs, soft beans and extra moist tuna salad. In this stage, you begin taking traditional pill or tablet vitamins.

Week 4+: In this phase, you will begin to incorporate moist deli meats and then a regular protein and regular food diet. A good long term guide is to eat your meals off of a salad plate and to eat your proteins and veggies first. These items give your the sustained energy needed for the day. From now on, your vitamins are taken regularly as pills or tablets.

Vitamin recommendations:

  • A pre-natal vitamin (2x daily)
  • A daily (1500mg) calcium supplement in the form of calcium citrate [i.e. Citracal]
  • A daily (1000mcg) sub-lingual vitamin B12.
